Warriors Secure First Win of Season with 1-0 Victory Over Providence Christian

Arcadia, CA - On Monday morning, the Warrior's Men's Soccer program traveled to Arcadia to take on CalPac opponent, Providence Christian, in a preseason matchup.  Providence entered the match 0-1, following a narrow loss to Saint Katherine's last week.  The Warriors entered the match 0-4, after losses to multiple tough opponents.  The match proved to be a dogfight as both teams put multiple shots on the goal, but the goalies held firm at the net, with the result being determined by one goal.  LPU secured their first win of the season, defeating Providence Christian 1-0.  With the win, LPU moves to 1-4 on the season.  They'll look to build off the momentum from this match as they travel to Lancaster on Thursday to take on the University of Antelope Valley.

For the match, LPU outshot Providence by a total of 19-12 shots.  From the first minute of the match, the Warriors applied pressure on the net, putting 7 shots on goal for the match.  This was the difference in this match in comparison to their previous 4, as they did not record a shot on goal in any of their prior matches.  Providence's Goalkeeper, Richie Cortes, did an outstanding job defending the net, but the Warriors eventually were able to break through.

In the 63rd minute, following a foul by Providence, Luis Mendoza was able to score on a free-kick from just outside of the box.  This goal would be the only goal scored in the game, and marks the Warrior's first goal of the season and Mendoza's first goal in a LPU uniform.  See the video of the goal below:

Joshua Queiroga was fantastic in the net for the Warriors, saving all 5 shots that were put on goal by the Seabeggars.  The Warrior's defense did an outstanding job playing phyiscal and controlling the time of possession throughout the match.

As he reflects on their first win of the season, Coach Joey DeSantis stated, "We kept battling for everything today, even with the weather conditions and injuries that have been sustained this season.  Today was a true test for us to see how we can perform with all the adversity.  I'm so proud of these guys and the way that we fought."
