Warriors Come Back From Down 15 to Win First GSAC Game in Program History
San Dimas, CA - On Saturday afternoon, the Warriors hosted the Spirit from OUAZ in a GSAC matchup. The Spirit ended the matchup with a 5-9 overall record while being 1-5 in the GSAC. After by trailing 15 points with 5 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter, the Warriors were able to pull off a miraculous comeback. Rachel Spinosa sent the game into overtime with a 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Warriors were able to take control of the OT period and pulled off the historic victory, 69-66. This marks the first ever GSAC victory for our Women's Basketball program and with the win, the Warriors tie their regular season high in wins at 5 wins. LPU improves to 5-12 and 1-6 in GSAC play.
The first half was a back and forth matchup by both of the teams. LPU took an early lead in the 2nd quarter as they were up 20-17, but that was quickly changed as the Spirit went on a 13-0 run, extending their lead to 30-20. The Spirit held a 32-25 lead at the half. The 2nd half was where all of the excitement started. OUAZ controlled the majority of the 2nd half, as they pushed their lead all the way up to 17 in the 3rd quarter. With 5:47 remaining the 4th quarter, the Warriors trailed 57-42 and their chances of coming back seemed bleak. They battled and finished the 4th quarter on a 17-2 run as they were able to tie things up at the buzzer, thanks to a Rachel Spinosa three-pointer. In OT, the Warriors controlled the pace of play and the momentum was on their side. They completed the miraculous comeback and took the historic victory by a final score of 69-66.
They were led by sophomore guard, Rachel Spinosa, who was stellar as she finished with 32 points, 9 rebounds, 6 steals, and 2 assists. Julianna Sanchez had 19 points and 7 rebounds, while Mikayla Murphy had her career high in rebounding, finishing with 11 boards, 4 of which were offensive.
When asked about the victory, Coach Kyler Kennedy stated, "Good things happen to those who don't quit. Beyond proud of our girls for fighting all game regardless of the score. We got it done with timely stops, tough rebounds, and stellar play. Rachel Spinosa is a special player and was able to help give us a gift on her birthday."
