Warriors Defeat Firestorm in Straight Sets, Completing Weekend GSAC Sweep
San Dimas, CA – On Saturday afternoon, the Warriors came back to Mehl Court, looking to complete the weekend sweep. Arizona Christian came into the match, fresh off a five-set victory against Hope International. After two hard fought sets between the two teams, the Warriors came out in the third set and put the Firestorm away early, completing the sweep, 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-17). LPU found success on offense, hitting an efficient .307 for the match.
In the first set, the Firestorm came out early and got off to an early lead, attacking efficiently from the start. The Warriors were able to adjust though, establishing a better presence at the net and making it difficult on the ACU. As LPU cut into the lead, they eventually were able to go on a service run to take the lead. Once they took the lead 18-17, they never looked back, winning the first set 25-20. Hannah Caddow and Mackenzie Grooms both had 4 kills in the first set, leading the Warriors offensively.
The second set mirrored the first as Arizona Christian did a good job of being the aggressor early. Caitlin Chan did a great job putting the attackers in positions to succeed. Nikole Lunsford had 3 straight aces, extending the Firestorm's lead to 12-6. LPU did not go away though, despite trailing by 6 points, as they chipped away at ACU's lead. Thanks to Mackenzie Stewart's stellar serves, LPU was able to take the lead 19-18, late in the 2nd set. They were able to put the set away, winning 25-21.
In the third set, the Warriors controlled the set from the jump, getting off to an early 14-6 lead. The attack for the Warriors proved to be too much for the Firestorm's defenders, as Mackenzie Grooms, Audrianna Guzman, Bailey Collette, and Hannah Caddow were forces on the attack. Lindsey Johnson and Daniela H'Orvath were steady as always, putting the hitters in great position to score. Caddow followed up her performance last night with another gem, tallying 11 kills and 18 digs, while hitting .304 in the three sets.
As Coach Wes Schneider reflected on Saturday's match, he stated, "Today was a nice win by our team. ACU came out hot and we started the match flat, but we were able to show patience and remained close in both of the first 2 sets, until we started to get rolling. It was good for our team to gain confidence that we are able to make things work and find ways to win, even when things aren't going well. I'm so proud of this group."
